Op uitnodiging van FOMU selecteert Katja Mater werken uit de collectie van het museum.  Je ziet objecten van vóór de uitvinding van de fotografie tot en met het absolute nu. Katja ontwerpt eigenzinnige kaders voor de collectiestukken en creëert er ruimtelijke installaties mee. Samen vormen ze een geheel waarin de ervaring en waarneming van tijd centraal staat: van zonnetijd, kosmische tijd, asynchrone tijd, tot het ritme van het lichaam, tijden van rouw, en onzichtbare tijd.  
In No Longer Not Yet beweeg je door verleden, heden en toekomst. Momenten zweven tussen ‘niet meer’ en ‘nog niet’, zoals herinneringen die we koesteren maar langzaam vervagen. Ook de foto’s in de FOMU-collectie zijn getuigen van een vluchtige tijd, bewaard voor een toekomst maar kwetsbaar voor verval en vergetelheid.  
Nauwgezet en zorgzaam omkadert Katja de werken, hun (anonieme) makers en de onderwerpen op de foto’s. Mater wijst op elementen die vaak onzichtbaar blijven of vergeten worden, zoals de boodschap op de achterkant van een foto. Intieme foto’s schermt Mater bewust af, ze waren tenslotte nooit voor onze ogen bedoeld. 

Kom binnen en kijk met beide ogen -of eerst met het ene en dan met het andere.

The exhibition in a maze is a relocation of the reading room/bookstore "12:15 Reading Room", founded by the curator of this exhibition Marija Repšytė, to the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, both in terms of the idea and the works of art – books. Time flies. Time binds. Time heals.
Time is killed. Time is money. Time will tell.
Make Time. Waste Time. Due Time. 
One perspective on Time defines it as a measure of change. In this view, clocks serve to track changes, visually representing the progression of seconds, days, or even seasons and years. The use of the sun for timekeeping dates back to prehistory. Sundials typically consist of a flat surface, known as the dial, and a gnomon, an object that casts a shadow onto the dial. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow aligns with different markings on the dial, enabling interpretation of its position. 
Katja Mater’s work consists of five single-hour markings placed throughout Buda, transforming the area into a (part of a) large-scale sundial. Each part uses a number that was already present, giving it the additional task of telling (summer) time. At 9:00 in the morning, the shadow of the street sign indicating 9 km to Brussels, located at the intersection of Schaarbeeklei and Diegemstraat, meets a marking on the wall. Simultaneously, a shadow is cast on the red house number at Emmanuellaan 9. At 13:00, we can observe a shadow on the large number 1 on the facade of Diegemstraat 1. At 14:00, a shadow falls on the numeral 2 to the right of the entrance of the First Kart-Inn, and at 16:00, another one appears on a graffiti-marked IIII on a wall next to the canal at Vaartdijk. The title or motto of Mater’s sundial, HIC . EST . TUUM . HORA (HERE . IS . YOUR . HOUR) serves as both a reminder and an offering to a passerby.

Artists move in and between Mu.ZEE and KAAP in Ostend. Several performances start, some ongoing. Some visible and loud, others barely perceptible. The actions follow the rhythm indicated by the sun, the tides and the clock. It will be a long day, (almost the longest).

When Things Fall Apart consists of a two-channel 16mm film installation in wich multiple exposed aerial drawings of celestial bodies and handwritten notes—made in the short period just after the death of her father and just before her mother died—alternate.

The rhythms of the two projectors are reminiscent of clocks ticking not 60 but 1440 times per minute. Film projectors and clocks share the same mechanism from the 17th century, converting continuous motion into intermittant motion, causing a second hand to 'tick' and a film frame to briefly freeze instead of sliding away in front of the lense. This specific movement is a measure of intangibly perforated micro-time, just as the duration of a photographic exposure is virtually impossible for humans to register.

Katja Mater's multiple exposures stack time and disrupt the concept of linearity, similarly to how in the experience of mourning the system of causality, in which we function on a daily basis, falls apart.

Dear Beursschouwburg staff member,

   During the week of the 27th of November until the 21 of December 2023 I would like to invite you to be part of a performance. 

   A performance for the Beursschouwburg audience, by you. Or perhaps, rather a week long performance by you, for you. 

   I would like to invite you to wear a wrist sun disc for this one week, both in and outside of the Beursschouwburg, while you are working here, but also on your way to work, in the supermarket, at your friends house, in the park. And off course (this is important) only if you would like to participate. 

   Regular watches tell us the indifferent time of the modern 24-hour system – a system that artificially divides our days up into regulated units that are the same everywhere, for all bodies, in all conditions, and across all seasons.*  

   These wrist sun discs have no numerical divisions. Instead, they are made with blank discs of polished brass; small, circular reflectors that shine and reflect with the shifting conditions of illumination of the sun coming into the building throughout the day. And with the artificial indoor lighting of the Beursschouwburg's many lamps after sundown. 

   An invitation to move with solar time and surrender to the body clock by stepping back from, and operating in resistance of monorhythmic, linear structured greenwich mean time, with its colonial politics of measurement and its capital demands of punctuality, productivity and efficiency. 

   These watches will be telling a time that is determined by the orientations and the movements of your body. On brighter days, the time on these watches will shine brighter. If you stand by the window or under a blazing theater lamp the watch might tell a time of brilliant sparkel and fleeting flashes.*

‘yours,’ is made up of five short films by Eva Giolo, Rebecca Jane Arthur, Katja Mater, Sirah Foighel Brutmann and Eitan Efrat, and Maaike Neuville. These artists were inspired by the work of renowned Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman (1950-2015), in particular by her film ‘News from Home’ (1976) in which we hear Akerman reading letters from her mother in Brussels while being in New York.
Each artist was asked to create one short film in their own voice and style, which would become part of one kaleidoscopic film. The result is a joint work that opens up a new conversation with Akerman’s work.C0N10UR Bianale WE ARE ROOTED BUT WE FLOW runs from September 8 to November 5 in 2023 and is curated by Auguste Orts. What constitutes a home? The central exhibition during Antwerp Art Weekend asks just this question. Curator Anna Laganovska brings together different artistic practices rooted in the domestic, revealing a ‘home’ as not just an external place, but also an internal space. They ask the audience to pay closer attention to the immaterial foundations our homes are built on: memories, routines, intimacy, our identities, and the passing of time. The exhibition refers to the previous uses of De Studio, originally the stately home of a prominent Antwerp family and later a hotel. SHHH takes the power and poetry of silent film as a starting point for screenings, performances and an exhibition. Perspective is a long-standing topic of interest for Dutch visual artist Katja Mater and American photographer Erin O’Keefe. It functions both as a playing field for practical experimentation and as a tool to raise questions about the supposedly indexical status of the photographic image. Even more, perspective reveals itself to be a significantly malleable construct. Mater and O’Keefe employ the optical ambivalence intrinsic to photography to highlight that seemingly fixed viewpoints are carefully composed, rather than fluid and subjective.

Whether they evoke a person cited, invoke an example or inspiration, whether they are life-size, reduced, enlarged, preparatory or final.

Freeze-Frame, a Vanitas of Light' investigates in what form film can exist without the physical presence of film. The starting point is the local history of Wetteren, where in the 1960s were four cinemas; Cinema Roxy, Cinema Nova, Cinema Max and Cinema Forum. The socialists, liberals and Catholics, each had their own cinema and one was there for the 'naughty' films. Now that these cinemas have disappeared from the street scene, the question remains whether the cinematic is still present in Wetteren, or can be, and how an idea of film can exist without actually being present as a film.

Winner of the NN Group Art Award, an incentive prize for exceptional talent, : The jury praised the recent steps in Katja Mater’s work. Mater (Hoorn, 1979) graduated in 2005 from De Ateliers in Amsterdam. She investigates the parameters of photography and film in which time, space and perception play a central role. The jury found her work to be intelligent and full of unpredictable results. What viewers see is not the same as what is happening in front of their eyes. Mater creates a different dimension, depicting depth and movement in a surprising way. Her work is also full of dualities: light-hearted and serious, improvised and deliberate at the same time. The work shows an adult artist who has not forgotten how to play. The jury expressed admiration for how Mater has successfully added a new chapter to an oeuvre that increasingly shows a strong own identity in the Dutch art landscape.

What happens to meaning when it is transformed from text to image, from concept to space or from human to parrot. The 4th symposium will draw on the previous symposium on the subject of emptiness and the nonself: “All phenomena in their own-being are empty (shunya)”. It implies that we and all existences do not have a solid core. How does this Buddhist concept relate to the way in which artists engage in ‘translating’ and ‘visualising’. Is the gesture of pouring meaning from one vessel to another in need of attentiveness to grasp the differences of presence of an image, language or space? Or is it a meaningless gesture in itself, a non existing mental construct?

This programme is a tribute to black, or rather to darkness. Indeed, it is not so much about the colour, or lack of it, but about its event: the instant of darkness as it occurs in cinema spaces. It is when the screen and the room fold into a single indistinct and limitless space; when the screen, the room and the bodies share a sudden invisibility, while perception and feeling remain. Then, in the darkness of the room, both the audience and the film itself fall back on themselves, and the cinema reflects on its creations, its material of light and shadows and the enjoyment of thoughts below the surface.

Through the creation of complex visual narratives, the international artists in this exhibition present provocative abstract forms that investigate art’s potential to interrupt and/or reconstruct elements of everyday life. Each of the seven  artists test the boundaries of working abstractly, with found objects and images, reformed digital technologies, as well as reference traditional techniques. While exploring the potential of objects in space, their ideas coalesce around an opposition to fixed forms. By encouraging examinations of context and allowing for ambiguous formal and narrative combinations to inform one another, Evidence of Houdini’s Return focuses on the value of abstraction in contemporary art discourse today.

The project takes Chris Marker's "La Jetée" as a point of departure, and researches the notion of time and memory, and more specifically the relationship between image and mark, traces, traumatism.
The collective exhibition will allow to insert the film – like a Freudian mnesic trace, and as an early work overloaded with possible inspirations and formal as well as conceptual tracks of thoughts – in a dialogue with about 10 mainly recent works. These will offer different formats and materials – not only short films or installations, but also plastic works and a performance – allowing thus for a broadening of the reflection.

On 07 October 2011 I was awarded the Royal Award for Painting 2011, together with Marie Civikov, Omar Koubâa and Navid Nuur.
The Royal Awards for Painting are presented each year by Her Majesty the Queen. They were first introduced by King William III in 1871 as an incentive to talented young painters. Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and the incumbent Queen Beatrix have kept up the tradition to this day.
Dutch independent professional artists who had not reached the age of 35 years on January 1, 2011, could compete for the Award. In 2011 – in response to advertisements in various media, over 200 artists’ sent in slides and documentation. 80 Artists were asked to submit two paintings for the second round.
